Pixel Peony

Pixel Peony

Derived from a still-life ink on paper drawing of a peony, the drawing became digitally translated and pixelated to rematerialise on a grand scale. Built to fill the entire Wall, (Postgraduate Corridor Wall at the VCA), the work measured 22m x 3.4m. It was created from approximately 1200 grayscale paper cards (each were 10cm square).

When viewing the work in its entirety, the original line drawing was still suggested, however due to the dimensions of the space, (the work could only be seen up close or from an angle). the perspective was distorted. Consequently the work looked quite different depending on the viewing point. On close inspection the work abstracted and appeared to vibrate, a sort of optical illusion, most evident when walking the length of the wall, somehow created by the size of the squares and grayscale palate.
